The move is based on the principle of reciprocity, following China’s trial policy that has allowed Russian citizens visa-free entry since 15 September 2025.

Until 14 September 2026, Chinese citizens holding regular passports of the People's Republic of China can enter Russia without a visa and stay up to 30 days, according to local media reports.

This arrangement came into effect after Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on 1 December 2025.

According to the decree, visa-free entry applies to Chinese nationals visiting Russia for family visits, business, tourism, participation in scientific, cultural, socio-political, economic or sports events, as well as for transit through Russian territory and exit from the country.

However, visas remain mandatory for those seeking work, study, or residency, as well as for individuals engaged in international road transportation as drivers, crew members, freight forwarders, or interpreters accompanying such vehicles.

Earlier this year, China announced a trial policy allowing Russian citizens holding ordinary passports to enter China visa-free between 15 September 2025 and 14 September 2026. Under this arrangement, Russian travellers may stay in China for up to 30 days for purposes including business, tourism, family/friends visit, exchange, and transit.
