The Hong Kong Observatory will assess the need to issue the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 depending on the movement and development of Severe Typhoon Podul.
Severe Typhoon Podul is now within 800 kilometres of Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Observatory has issued Standby Signal, No. 1, which will remain in force during the day today (13 August).
Depending on Podul's distance, intensity, and changes in local winds, the Observatory will assess whether to issue the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 between tonight and tomorrow morning (14 August).
Podul will be closest to Hong Kong tomorrow morning. Its rainbands will bring heavy squally showers and thunderstorms over the territory tomorrow.
Due to the influence of Podul's outer subsiding air, parts of the territory will experience extreme heat today, with temperatures reaching 35°C or higher. High temperatures may also trigger showers and squally thunderstorms in Guangdong and around the Pearl River Estuary later today.
The Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health urges the public to take appropriate precautions against heat-related illnesses, such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke during very hot weather.
The Observatory also advises the public to pay attention to the latest weather information.
