Hong Kong jumps to become the 44th most liveable city in the world

The SAR is among the top movers alongside Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Athens, and Luxembourg.

Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has released the Global Liveability Index 2025. Hong Kong has seen a significant improvement in its ranking by climbing six spots to 44th, making it among the biggest movers alongside Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Athens, and Luxembourg.

With the research having assessed 173 cities worldwide across 30 indicators, categorised into stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure, Copenhagen has overtaken Vienna to claim the top spot as the world’s most comfortable city to live in.

Vienna’s three-year reign at the top has ended due to the potential attack threats in 2024. This year, it shares second place with Zurich.

Australian cities performed exceptionally well, with Melbourne (4th), Sydney (6th), and Adelaide (9th) making the top ten.

Other leading cities from the APAC region included Osaka (Japan) and Auckland (New Zealand).

Overall, Al Khobar (Saudi Arabia) has shown the most improvement, with a sharp gains in scores for healthcare and education, taking it up 13 places in the rankings. Calgary (Canada) experienced the biggest drop, falling from fifth place to 18th. Additionally, three UK cities – Manchester, London, and Edinburgh – were also among the biggest fallers due to a decrease in their stability scores.
