Maritime Singapore awards over 70 scholarships to build a pipeline of maritime talent

The scholarships will offer students opportunities for industry networking, mentorship, internships, as well as avenues to become ship captains or chief engineers, with the potential to later assume leadership roles within the industry.

More than 70 MaritimeONE and Tripartite Maritime scholarships were awarded by sponsors from the industry, unions, associations, foundations, and institutes of higher learning at the MaritimeONE and Tripartite Maritime Scholarships (TMSS) Awards Ceremony 2024 on 6 September 2024.

MaritimeONE scholarship

This year, 63 recipients were awarded the MaritimeONE scholarship, which amounted to more than S$1.8mn. To date, a total of 647 scholarships with an aggregate value of S$17.6mn have been awarded by the Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF) and sponsor organisations.

The 39 sponsoring organisations this year come from a broad spectrum of Singapore's dynamic maritime ecosystem comprising:

  • shipping
  • port operations
  • maritime services
  • marine and offshore
  • associations
  • classification societies
  • foundations
  • institutes of higher learning

Scholarship recipients will be given opportunities towards industry networking, mentorship, internships, and more. While most recipients pursue maritime-related disciplines, some are currently studying in fields including accountancy, data science, artificial intelligence, business analytics, computer science, engineering, and law.

Besides developing maritime talents through the MaritimeONE scholarships, Maritime Singapore said it is also attracting and developing local sea-going professionals through the Tripartite Maritime Scholarship (TMSS).

Tripartite Maritime scholarship

Launched in 2002, the TMSS offers seafaring scholarships to students pursuing a Diploma in Nautical Studies or Marine Engineering at the Singapore Maritime Academy, Singapore Polytechnic.

This scholarship offers students the opportunity to work towards becoming ship captains or chief engineers, with the potential to later assume leadership roles within the maritime industry. A total of 10 students will receive the TMSS this year, supported by industry partners.

Hor Weng Yew, Chairman, Singapore Maritime Foundation, said: "The MaritimeONE scholars represent the future of our industry: multifaceted yet cohesive, technology-driven while at its core people-centric and embodying environmental consciousness in all that we do across sea to shore."

"I congratulate the scholarship recipients as they pursue their studies and look forward to their contributions to Maritime Singapore."

Tep Eng Dih, Chief Executive, Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore added: "Maritime Singapore offers rich and diverse job opportunities, including careers at shore and sea for youths to work with cutting edge technologies, and be part of the global maritime supply chain.

"The MaritimeONE and Tripartite Maritime scholarships are part of the talent development initiative by the government, unions, and industry to build the next generation of maritime leaders who are more digitally savvy and care about the environment, to help shape a global maritime future that is more digital and sustainable."
