SNEF President and Council member Dr. Robert Yap steps down from his role

In a statement responding to the update, the National Trades Union Congress expressed its appreciation to Dr. Yap for his contributions to the Labour Movement and workers in Singapore.

Dr. Robert Yap has stepped down from his positions as President of the Singapore National Employers Federation and Council member of the Federation, effective Tuesday, 11 June 2024.

⁠According to a media statement by SNEF, the Council discovered a governance procedural lapse during a routine internal review and an external consultant was promptly engaged for a thorough review of their processes. 

"The Council holds itself and the Management to the highest standards of governance," the Council commented, adding that an independent review is currently in progress. At the time of writing, the Council has not identified any financial implications resulting from this lapse.

In his statement to the Council, Dr. Yap said: "It has been my honour to serve SNEF over the past decade. I thank the SNEF Council, SNEF members and tripartite stakeholders for their years of support.

"It is never easy but I have done what I can. It is also time to hand over the reigns of leadership.

"I understand the Council’s decision to engage an external consultant to pursue an independent review.

"I wish SNEF the very best and I remain committed to tripartism in Singapore."

In a media statement responding to the update, the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) said: "Under his leadership, SNEF contributed to numerous tripartite councils and workgroups, advocating businesses’ interest in improving the lives and livelihoods of workers, including lower-wage workers, older workers and Professionals, Managers and Executives. 

"For these and more, we are appreciative of Dr Yap’s and SNEF’s many contributions to our Labour Movement and workers. 

"NTUC will continue to uphold Tripartism with SNEF and the Ministry of Manpower (MOM). 

Tripartism has been and continues to be one of the cornerstones of Singapore’s success", NTUC affirmed.
