South Korea's airport workers on an indefinite nationwide strike from 1 October 2025

Workers across the nation’s 15 airports have vowed to continue striking until their demands for improved working conditions are met.

Workers at 15 airports across South Korea, including Incheon International Airport, Gimpo International Airport, and Jeju International Airport, have commenced an indefinite general strike starting Wednesday, 1 October 2025.

A full-scale walkout began at 6am on Wednesday, followed by a general strike rally held at 2pm near Exit 3 of the domestic terminal at Gimpo Airport, according to the Korean Public Service and Transport Workers’ Union (KPTU) and reports from local media outlets such as Korea JoongAng Daily and The Chosun Daily.

The striking workers are demanding improvements to their working conditions, including:

  • fair treatment and enhanced welfare benefits,
  • reform of the current three-team, two-shift system to a four-team, two-shift system,
  • increased staffing and more rest days, and
  • strengthened workplace safety measures.

The National Airport Workers’ Solidarity stated that the strike will continue indefinitely, spanning National Foundation Day on Friday and the Chuseok (Mid-Autumn Festival) holidays, until the airport workers’ demands are addressed.

The union also highlighted that the striking workers are responsible for different aspects of airport operations, including runway management, firefighting services, and the maintenance of electrical and mechanical facilities.

Despite the scale of the strike, Korea Airports Corporation assured that airport security personnel are not participating, and therefore disruptions to flight operations are expected to be limited, as cited by Reuters.
