The unions have urged the company to settle outstanding salaries for employees as soon as possible.

A 40-year-old Hong Kong-based local bakery brand Taipan Bread & Cakes has announced the immediate closure of all its operations.

According to local news reports, notices have been posted outside its branches today (24 June 2025), stating that the business was forced to officially close from today due to “many unpredictable and irresistible shocks recently".

In the notice, Taipan expressed gratitude to customers for their support over the years, and apologised for any inconvenience caused.

The company also informed employees in another notice that "all employment contracts will be terminated on the same day".

Reports have indicated that many branches of Taipan had already closed earlier, and the company had been facing financial difficulties, including debts related to rent and employee wages.

The Hotels, Food and Beverage Employees Association, and the Eating Establishment Employees General Union (EEEGU), acknowledged the cessation of Taipan's business operations on Facebook. The unions have urged the company to settle outstanding salaries for employees as soon as possible, and called on affected workers to contact the unions for assistance at the soonest.

Taipan Bread & Cakes first opened in 1984 and introduced the world's first snowy mooncakes in 1989, which quickly gained popularity among consumers.

At its peak, the company had more than 20 stores across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and the New Territories. However, as noted on its official website, only 12 stores had remained open prior to this full closure.
