The Futurist: HR leader Annelies Maxwell on shifting HR from a transactional to transformative approach

"Forward-thinking organisations that prioritise the organisational development and leverage their people functions to achieve this will be our game changers 10 years from now", Annelies Maxwell, GM People & Culture, Global Engineering & Construction shares.

The role HR is rapidly evolving. Gone are the days of surface-level administrative tasks and transactional processes. Instead, it is now important to adopt a long-term holistic view for your organisation.

Amidst emerging technologies and shifting employee sentiments, more people leaders are pivoting their people strategies to better support their workforce.

In this revival edition of HRO's The Futurist, we ask Annelies Maxwell, General Manager People & Culture, Global Engineering & Construction, one question — what is your vision for the future of HR, perhaps 10 years from now?

Maxwell breaks it down into three spheres.

What aspects do you expect the most change in?

To ensure sustainability in 10 years time, HR must evolve from transactional to a transformative approach. The era of struggling for a “seat at the table” is behind us; forward-thinking organisations that prioritise the organisational development and leverage their people functions to achieve this will be our game changers 10 years from now.

HR professionals are already pivotal is leveraging human capital and technology to shape organisational dynamics. However, the rapid advancements in AI and the emergence of the next generation of workers will accelerate the need for HR to adapt swiftly, to ensure 10 years from now organisations can sustain profitability and growth. The discourse surrounding hybrid or remote work will fade, giving way to a focus on cultivating fulfilling, purpose driven roles that redefine the principles of work.

What are some things you expect HR to do away with?

Imposing transactional burdens on organisations. HR must become the adaptive catalyst of change and partnering with their business will be critical to achieve this. HR need to remove the ‘clutter’ that often-red tape growth and development and leverage technology and innovative methodologies to transcend an administrative mindset.

What excites you the most about the future of HR?

It is undeniable that the future of HR will be profoundly shaped by technological advancements, particularly in AI.

The focus on talent and development will see a shift in capabilities within organisations and one that we need to navigate swiftly so we can manage the shift in cultural dynamics that AI will bring. Data-driven insights will be our most powerful tool to ensure we are able to champion the continuous development of people-centric strategies. The HR profession have the opportunity to be game changers in a landscape that relatively unknown.
