Winning Secrets: Chememan recognises that effective change management must be applied consistently from beginning to end

"Clear communication is pivotal when engaging with diverse groups, from executives to managers, supervisors, and operators," says the HR team, stressing the need to deliver the right message, through the right channels, at the right time, and by the right people.

As it undergoes a corporate transformation, leading lime and lime derivative chemical producer Chememan places a strong emphasis on its key pillar — the people strategy. In this regard, its people have been shaped by existing culture and practices over the years.

With this focus, the organisation has won two bronze awards at the at the HR Excellence Awards 2024, Thailand, for:

  • Excellence in In-House Talent Pipeline Strategy, and
  • Excellence in Work-Life Harmony

Catching up with HRO on the back of these wins, the Chememan HR team shares how it fosters organisational alignment and readiness.

Q What was the motivation that sparked your passion business case for pursuing your outstanding people strategy?

Chememan is currently undergoing a corporate transformation to prepare for leadership transition while enhancing its competitiveness in the global market. A key pillar of this transformation is our people strategy, which plays a critical role in ensuring its success. Over the years, we have professionally executed a series of strategic initiatives aimed at fostering organisational alignment and readiness, positioning Chememan to navigate this pivotal phase effectively.

Q Looking back, can you share a challenge that you overcame in your journey of HR excellence? How did you triumph?

Change management is undoubtedly one of the critical challenges in this transformation. Our people have been shaped and developed by the existing culture and practices over the years. As we navigate this transformation through multiple initiatives, significant effort is required to create awareness, gain buy-in, and foster support for these new challenges. Moreover, the integration of external resources adds further complexity, intensifying the challenges we face along this journey.

Q Beyond the recognition, what impact do you hope your feature in the HR Excellence Awards would have on the HR community and manpower landscape?

This is a valuable opportunity for us to learn and benchmark with our peers. The HR Excellence Awards not only validates our transformation journey but also enhances our visibility within the HR and manpower community. We believe this recognition will serve as a credible source of insight for newcomers, providing a deeper understanding of our company beyond what is written on the website. We truly walk the talk.

Q Could you share some advice you would give to others aspiring to follow in your footsteps?

It is essential that we approach this transformation professionally and holistically, rather than tackling it on a project-by-project basis. A fragmented approach can lead to confusion among stakeholders and hinder progress. Effective change management must be applied consistently from beginning to end, rather than through isolated efforts. Clear communication is pivotal when engaging with diverse groups, from executives to managers, supervisors, and operators. Delivering the right message, through the right channels, at the right time, and by the right people is critical to success. Additionally, partnering with the right external collaborators can be a key factor in driving this transformation forward.

Q Let's talk inspiration! Who has been a driving force behind your success?

The support of all stakeholders is crucial to the success of this transformation, with leadership playing a particularly critical role. Executive backing is essential to drive this journey forward, and each leader must actively contribute to steering change. As people on the ground may feel fear and discomfort during this process, executives have a unique opportunity to work closely with both project teams and their teams to jointly overcome these challenges. In today’s ever-evolving environment, change has become the norm. It is the responsibility of the leadership to ensure that the entire organisation adopts this mindset and remains ready for the future.
