Starting from 2026, Easter Monday will be added as a statutory holiday under the Employment Ordinance.
It's time to plan ahead for your business calendars and vacation schedules, as the HKSAR government has announced the list of general holidays for 2026.
According to the list, employees can enjoy six long weekends next year to celebrate Easter, Labour Day, the Birthday of the Buddha, Tuen Ng Festival, Chung Yeung Festival, and Christmas.
Since the Ching Ming Festival in 2026 falls on a Sunday, the following day will be designated as a general holiday in substitution. In this connection, as the day following the Ching Ming Festival falls on Easter Monday, the next day that is not itself a general holiday will be observed as an additional general holiday.
Moreover, both the Birthday of the Buddha and the Chung Yeung Festival fall on a Sunday in 2026, so the day following will be designated as a general holiday in substitution.
In exciting news for employees eligible for statutory holidays, starting from 2026, Easter Monday will be added as a statutory holiday under the Employment Ordinance, bringing the total number of statutory holidays to 15 days.
