Singapore and the International Energy Agency (IEA) have launched the IEA Regional Cooperation Centre on 21 October 2024, making it the first IEA office outside of its Paris headquarters.
Initially announced at the IEA’s 50th Anniversary celebrations, the new centre will function as a hub for the IEA’s activities and engagements in Southeast Asia and beyond, where it will work with all countries in the region Asia and beyond to enhance energy security and accelerate clean energy transitions. It will serve as a hub for the IEA’s activities and engagements in the region and beyond, providing policy guidance, technical assistance, and training and capacity building.
The centre's focus will primarily be on scaling-up the deployment of renewables and other clean energy technologies, promoting cross-border power trade and improving access to finance for clean energy investment.
In its statement, the Energy Market Authority affirmed the long-standing history of collaboration between Singapore and the IEA, which began in 2016 when the nation first joined as an Association Country. Since then, the Singapore-IEA Regional Training Hub has jointly trained more than 1,500 participants from over 35 countries through eight editions of its associated programme.
SIEW 2024 also features the eighth edition of the Singapore-IEA Ministerial Forum, which will ocus on the theme of “Unlocking Southeast Asia’s Decarbonisation Potential” for this year.
