Lazada to undertake workforce reduction across Southeast Asia amid organisational review

The e-commerce platform says selected roles were reviewed based on business needs and organisational efficiency, with affected employees to receive transition support in accordance with local requirements.

Lazada has cut approximately 5% of its workforce across Southeast Asia following a review of selected roles aimed at improving organisational efficiency.

The e-commerce platform confirmed on Tuesday (23 June) that it had laid off some employees across its regional markets after assessing roles against current business needs, role requirements, and organisational priorities.

According to a report by The Business Times (BT), the exercise affects about 5% of Lazada's workforce across Southeast Asia. The company did not disclose the number of employees impacted or specify which functions were affected.

The workforce reduction is said to span Lazada's six Southeast Asian markets: Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines.

In a statement responding to Human Resources Online, Lazada said the review forms part of its continued efforts to ensure the organisation remains focused, efficient, and aligned with current business needs.

BT reported that the latest job cuts are not related to any artificial intelligence initiatives.

Addressing the impact on employees, Lazada said affected staff would be engaged directly and treated "with care, respect, and dignity throughout the process."

The company added: “We are committed to supporting affected employees through the transition with relevant guidance and support, in line with applicable requirements.”

In Singapore, it said it is working closely with the Food, Drinks and Allied Workers Union (FDAWU), an affiliate of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC), to ensure the process is handled responsibly and that support is accorded to affected employees.

Across its other markets, Lazada added that it is also working with relevant government entities and agencies, where required, to ensure the process is managed in accordance with local requirements and with due consideration for those impacted.

Looking ahead, Lazada said its commitment remains unchanged as it continues to serve customers, sellers, brands, and partners, "while building a more focused and resilient organisation for the long term."
