Malaysia & China sign MoUs on visa exemptions, transport, security matters, and more

The signing and agreements took place during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s first state visit to Malaysia in 12 years ago.

A bilateral meeting between Malaysia and China took place on Thursday (17 April) at the Seri Perdana Complex, Malaysia, with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Malaysia’s president Anwar Ibrahim meeting face-to-face for the first time in 12 years.

Describing the relationship between China and Malaysia, PM Anwar said it symbolised the solid commitment between both parties as Anwar attributed this closeness on the attitude of trust, respect and honesty they have for one another.

At the meeting, both leaders witnessed multiple agreements made between the Government of Malaysia and the Government of China through the signing of about 31 Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) in various fields.

These included:

  1. An MoU on Strengthening Cooperation in Global Security Initiatives.
  2. An agreement on Return Visa Exemption for Holders of Official Passport and Ordinary Passport.
  3. An MoU between China National Railway Administration and Malaysia Ministry of Transport on Strengthening Cooperation in Railway Sector.
  4. An MoU on Cooperation in Trade in the Service Field.
  5. A tourism and media cooperation MoU between China Media Group (CMG) and Tourism Promotion Board Malaysia (Tourism Malaysia).

After the meeting, PM Anwar took it to Facebook to comment: "In a challenging world, we see China presenting as a rational, stable, and principled friend. Malaysia appreciates this stability and will continue to be friends, witnessing history and visionary for the future."

He also expressed his wish for Malaysia and China’s friendship to continue blossoming “as deep as the ocean, as strong as the sky, and as bright as the hope that shines for the future prosperity”.
