Malaysia’s monsoon transition phase expected to begin on 29 March: MetMalaysia

The monsoon shift may bring variable winds, short heavy rain bursts, and stronger flash flood risks across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak.

Malaysia is expected to enter the monsoon transition phase on 29 March 2026

According to an update on 25 March 2026, Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip, Director-General, Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, said the phase is forecast to continue until May and marks the end of the 2025/2026 Northeast Monsoon, which began on 13 November 2025.

During this period, weak winds from various directions can lead to the formation of thunderstorm clouds, bringing heavy rain and strong winds in short bursts. These conditions are most likely in the evening and early during the night, especially across western and inland areas of Peninsular Malaysia, and western Sabah and Sarawak.

The department warned that this weather may cause flash floods, fallen trees, and damage to unstable structures.

The public has been urged to monitor weather updates through the MetMalaysia official website, myCuaca mobile app, and official social media channels. Enquiries can also be directed to the department hotline at 1-300-22-1638.

As the monsoon transition phase begins, the public is advised to prepare for potential weather disruptions, particularly during the evening and night, to stay safe and minimise impact.
