METMalaysia said the season will bring lower rainfall and longer dry spells across much of the country until September, although thunderstorms and strong winds may still affect several regions in the early mornings.
Malaysia is expected to enter the Southwest Monsoon season beginning 14 May 2026, with the weather pattern forecast to continue until September, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia).
METMalaysia said the season will see winds blowing consistently from the southwest towards the country. During this period, air humidity levels are usually lower, resulting in fewer rain clouds forming across most areas.
As a result, rainfall is expected to decrease compared to other times of the year, with more dry days anticipated nationwide.
However, the department noted that heavy rain, strong winds, and thunderstorms could still occur in parts of the western Peninsula, northern Sarawak, and western Sabah, particularly during the early morning.
This is due to the squall line phenomenon, which refers to a line of thunderstorms that forms over the waters of the Strait of Malacca and the eastern South China Sea before moving inland. METMalaysia said the weather system develops because of converging winds and can persist for several hours.
The department also warned that haze conditions may occur during the peak of the season between July and September if open burning activities are not properly controlled.
In light of the drier conditions, the public has been advised to avoid open burning to reduce the risk of environmental pollution and haze. People are also encouraged to use water wisely throughout the season due to the expected lower rainfall levels.
METMalaysia said the public can stay updated on the latest weather forecasts and warnings through its official website, the myCuaca mobile application, and the department’s official social media channels.
