The new facility aims to build India's pipeline of semiconductor talent through partnerships with various universities nationwide, to support Micron's operations in the country.
Micron Technology has opened its first semiconductor assembly and test facility in India, located in Sanand, Gujarat, on 28 February. The facility covers over 500,000 square feet of cleanroom space and will process DRAM and NAND wafers into memory and storage products for global customers.
The project represents an estimated US$2.75bn investment in partnership with the Indian and Gujarat governments. Commercial production has started, with initial shipments, including made-in-India memory modules to Dell Technologies for its laptops made in India for India, already underway. Micron expects the facility to assemble and test tens of millions of chips in 2026, increasing to in hundreds of millions in 2027.
Micron is investing in workforce readiness through partnerships with Pandit Deendayal Energy University (PDEU), Namtech and other universities, alongside broader skills development initiatives.
These efforts will focus on:
- STEM education pathways
- Specialised semiconductor training
- Workforce preparation for advanced manufacturing roles
- Digital and AI literacy programmes in surrounding communities
In addition, the facility has also been built with sustainability in mind. According to the company, the site:
- Is designed to meet or exceed Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold standards,
- Uses advanced water-saving technologies, and
- Enables zero liquid discharge through water recycling systems
Sanjay Mehrotra, Chairman, President and CEO, Micron Technology expressed his excitement, saying: "This pioneering facility, the first assembly and test site of its kind in the country, helps build a resilient ecosystem that underpins the global AI economy.
Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister for Railways, Communications, Electronics & IT, added: "The inauguration of Micron’s semiconductor facility in Sanand marks a historic milestone as Bharat begins its first commercial semiconductor chip production.
"This is a decisive step towards building a trusted, resilient and self-reliant semiconductor ecosystem under the leadership of Hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji. India is now moving from being a consumer of chips to becoming a global hub for semiconductor manufacturing and innovation.”
Also in attendance at the opening ceremony were Narendra Modi, Prime Minister, Bhupendra Patel, Chief Minister of Gujarat, Sergio Gor, US Ambassador to India, and other distinguished government officials and guests.
