Nine killed as Typhoon Dujuan triggers flooding and landslides in eastern Japan

The storm brought torrential rain, flooding, and landslides to eastern Japan, with Chiba Prefecture among the hardest-hit areas after enduring severe weather earlier this year.

The death toll from Typhoon Dujuan has risen to nine in Japan, while four people remain missing after the storm unleashed torrential rain, flooding, and landslides across eastern Japan earlier this week, according to Kyodo News.

Of the nine confirmed fatalities, six were reported in Chiba Prefecture and three in neighbouring Kanagawa Prefecture, southwest of Tokyo. Search and rescue operations remain ongoing for four people who are still unaccounted for following the severe weather.

The typhoon struck during Japan's five-day Silver Week holiday period, causing widespread disruption to transportation services and daily life across parts of eastern Japan.

Chiba Prefecture was among the hardest-hit areas, having already experienced heavy rainfall and flooding in August and early September.

Transport services were also disrupted. According to updates from East Japan Railway (JR East), several rail services have been partially suspended due to the typhoon and its aftermath.

Affected lines include the Jōban Line (Rapid Service), Sōbu Line, Uchibō Line, Kururi Line, Sotobō Line, Tōgane Line, and Narita Line.
