Maersk expands Singapore logistics footprint with new automated distribution hub

The new facility is expected to create about 500 roles in digitalisation and automation amidst growing demand for faster, more agile supply chains across the region.

A.P. Moller - Maersk (Maersk) has unveiled a new fully automated distribution centre in Singapore, placing digitalisation and workforce transformation at the centre of its latest expansion in Asia Pacific.

The 1.1mn square foot facility, known as World Gateway II, is designed to support both B2B and B2C fulfilment across sectors including retail, FMCG, wellness, and technology amidst growing demand for faster, more agile supply chains across the region.

At the core of the facility is a suite of advanced automation systems, including Multi-Shuttle System, Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS), Autonomous Case-handling Robots (ACR), and Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs). Together, these systems are expected to enable faster order fulfilment, shorter lead times, and improved accuracy by reducing manual handling.

The facility is expected to create around 500 roles utilising advanced digital and automation capabilities, once it is fully operational.

Supported by the Singapore Government, the facility is designed with the goal to serve companies that rely on Singapore as a regional or global distribution hub. The facility's proximity to key transport infrastructure, including Tuas Port and Changi Airport, is also expected to provide better support for efficient regional and international distribution.

"The launch of World Gateway II reflects the importance of Singapore to our global network and the immense opportunities we see in Asia. Underpinned by continued export strength and increasing consumption, Asia’s growth trajectory remains extraordinary," said Vincent Clerc, CEO, Maersk.

Png Cheong Boon, Chairman, EDB welcomed the investment, noting that it reinforces Singapore’s position as a premier logistics hub in Asia Pacific and provides businesses with a trusted base to scale across fast-growing markets.

Sharing his point of view, Ang Wee Keong, Chief Executive of Martime & Port Authority of Singapore said leveraging Singapore’s strong connectivity and efficient port infrastructure will enable businesses to optimise their supply chains by co-locating logistics, manufacturing, and distribution activities.

"This will improve their efficiency and speed to market, and help strengthen the resilience of the global supply chain," he added.

Other facility highlights at the World Gateway II include:

  • 11m clear height per floor to support dense storage and automation
  • Ample loading bays and rooftop container parking for peak demand
  • Customs-bonded, zero-GST storage with deferred tax on non-dutiable goods
  • End-to-end transport management with real-time tracking and visibility
  • Value-added services including labelling, kitting, and re-packing
  • Integrated WMS for enhanced accuracy, visibility, and system integration
  • LEED and Green Mark Platinum certified with energy-efficient features
  • TAPA Class A certified for high-security warehousing
