Low-cost carriers: Experience beyond price

Among low-cost carriers, HK Express was named the world’s best for 2026.

Commenting on the win, Sharon Petersen, CEO of AirlineRatings.com, noted that while the airline does not offer extras such as Wi-Fi or inflight entertainment, it stands out for its cabin crew and onboard menu. The menu, described as a defining highlight, features a mix of Hong Kong street food and international options.

Jetstar ranked second, supported by its inflight entertainment and in-seat power, while AirAsia Group came in third, recognised for its Fly Thru connection service. AirBaltic also stood out by offering complimentary Wi-Fi to all passengers.

Hybrid airlines: A growing segment

The awards also highlight the rise of hybrid airlines, which combine elements of low-cost and full-service models depending on route length.

Lufthansa ranked first in this category, followed by WestJet and Virgin Australia. These airlines typically offer buy-on-board services on short routes, while maintaining full-service features such as seatback screens and added comfort on longer journeys.

This model has become more common, particularly among European and American carriers adapting to increased competition from low-cost airlines.
