Officials and businesses discussed ways to strengthen economic cooperation and support Vietnamese companies growing their presence in Indonesia, as bilateral trade and tourism continue to rise.
Vietnamese officials and businesses have discussed measures to strengthen economic and trade cooperation with Indonesia, with a focus on supporting Vietnamese companies looking to expand their investment and operations in the country.
The discussions took place at a meeting in Hanoi on 13 March 2026, chaired by Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Manh Cuong.
As shared by the Vietnam News Agency, the session brought the Vietnamese ambassador to Indonesia as well as representatives from several Vietnamese companies already operating in the Indonesian market. These included Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air, Vingroup, TH True Milk, FPT Corporation, and Thanh Thanh Cong - Bien Hoa JSC, and more.
Participants noted that economic cooperation between Vietnam and Indonesia has strengthened significantly in recent years. The progress has been built on more than 70 years of diplomatic relations and further boosted after the two countries elevated their ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership in March last year.
Trade between the two countries reached US$17.2bn in 2025, moving closer to the US$18bn target set for 2028.
Tourism exchanges are also said to have recovered strongly. In 2025, about 203,000 Indonesian visitors travelled to Vietnam, more than double the number recorded before the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the update, Vietnamese companies have played a growing role in these developments through their increasing presence in the Indonesian market. For instance, Vingroup has begun building an electric vehicle ecosystem in Indonesia through the expansion of VinFast, Xanh SM, and V-Green.
At the same time, Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet Air have been operating flights connecting Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City with Jakarta and Bali.
Other companies such as FPT Corporation, The Gioi Di Dong, and TH True Milk are also exploring opportunities to expand their operations in Indonesia.
Business representatives at the meeting highlighted the support provided by Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Vietnamese Embassy in Indonesia in facilitating their investment and business activities.
They also pointed out that Indonesia offers strong growth potential. As the largest economy in ASEAN and a member of the G20, the country has a population of around 280mn people and a rapidly expanding consumer market.
Deputy Minister Cuong commended Vietnamese businesses for their efforts to grow their investment and business presence in Indonesia. He noted that economic diplomacy and development-oriented diplomacy have remained key priorities for the ministry in recent years.
He encouraged companies to continue demonstrating innovation and a pioneering spirit to strengthen cooperation between the two economies and deliver practical benefits to both countries’ people.
Deputy Minister Cuong added that the Foreign Ministry will continue supporting Vietnamese enterprises with a people- and business-centred approach, helping them expand into international and regional markets, including Indonesia.
As economic ties deepen, closer cooperation between governments and businesses is expected to play a key role in enabling Vietnamese firms to strengthen their presence in Indonesia.
