Upcoming INR33,500 crore development projects in Delhi include new Metro lines and housing

The projects come as part of a wider aim to improve connectivity, access to jobs, and workforce mobility across the capital.

Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, recently inaugurated multiple development projects in Delhi worth around INR33,500 crore, covering transport, housing, and community initiatives. While the projects are designed to improve the city’s infrastructure, they are also expected to have direct implications for people and the workforce — from better connectivity and access to jobs, to opportunities for local hiring and skills development.

The projects include the expansion of the Metro network, modern residential complexes for government employees, upgraded bus services, and initiatives aimed at improving public spaces, healthcare, and financial access. For employees and organisations, this means easier commutes, safer and more convenient living conditions, and a growing pool of talent across the city.

Modernising Delhi's infrastructure

Emphasising Delhi as a symbol of India’s democracy, the Prime Minister noted that upgrading infrastructure such as the Namo Bharat train and expanding the Metro network to 375km is essential for showcasing India’s confidence globally.

“The more modern, convenient, and better-connected Delhi becomes, the more strongly India’s self-confidence will be visible to the world,” the Prime Minister added.

Transport facilities are being systematically upgraded to ensure clean, comfortable, and modern travel for the lakhs of citizens who rely on buses daily. In addition to the 4,000 electric buses already in operation, 1,800 new electric buses — including hundreds of ‘Devi Buses’ — have been deployed to enhance last-mile connectivity across Delhi’s neighborhoods.

The government is also working to address broader traffic challenges. According to PM Modi, the Peripheral Expressway has successfully diverted lakhs of vehicles from entering the city, easing congestion, while rejuvenation work on the Yamuna River is already underway to improve its cleanliness.

Housing and workforce wellbeing

Housing projects are looking to provide clean, safe, and comfortable homes for thousands of government employees.

"Those who work tirelessly to fulfill the nation’s resolutions deserve safe, clean, and convenient living conditions, which is the driving force behind these new infrastructure projects,” he elaborated.

Community initiatives and financial inclusion

Community-focused projects, including Ayushman Arogya Mandirs and financial inclusion schemes for street vendors, will seek to enhance livelihoods, which the goal to eventually boost skills and empower women and marginalised groups. Credit card facilities will also now be extended to street vendors to help small businesses grow.

“The SVANidhi credit card is becoming a new medium of self-respect for the poor, ensuring that those who were once marginalised are now empowered with modern financial tools,” PM Modi highlighted.

These initiatives also extend to women’s economic participation, with more than 10 crore women (equivalent to about 100mn) expected to benefit through Self-Help Groups and other programmes, creating new opportunities for financial independence and workforce participation.
